Dengue fever cases on rise in Taiwan

TAIPEI, Taiwan, March 18 (UPI) -- The Centers for Disease Control says the 35 imported dengue fever cases reported in Taiwan mark a dramatic increase of the mosquito-borne disease.

The Taipei Times said Wednesday that CDC statistics indicate the 35 dengue fever cases reported in Taiwan this year is more than double the reported tally of 15 from the same time period in 2008.

Taiwan has reported 21 imported dengue fever cases from Indonesia, along with 10 from Vietnam, two from Thailand and one each from India and Myanmar.

Indonesia has reported more than 10,000 dengue fever cases as of early March, including 13 deaths from the disease.

Malaysia's total has reached 10,916 cases, while Singapore has endured 3,953 cases.

Due to such totals, CDC officials have warned those traveling to such locales to take necessary precautions to limit mosquito bites.

The Times said symptoms of the potentially deadly disease include abdominal pain, bleeding, fever and vomiting.
