Deadly stray dogs hunted down in Italy

RAGUSA, Italy, March 17 (UPI) -- Police in the southern Italian island of Sicily say they are hunting down stray dogs after a young boy was killed and a woman mauled by roving canines.

The 10-year-old boy was pulled from his bicycle and killed by a pack of strays Sunday and a 24-year-old German tourist was seriously injured in an attack while she walked on a beach Tuesday in the Ragusa area, in southeast Sicily, the BBC reported.

Police captured about 30 free-running dogs after the boy's death but said there were still about 20 animals still at large, the British network said.

The BBC said there were reports the dogs had been neglected by a man who was supposed to be caring for them. A suspect had been arrested, the network said.

Animal rights activists say there are as many as half a million stray dogs in Italy, many of them feral.
