Tamil Tiger leader believed in Sri Lanka

COLOMBO, Sri Lanka, March 16 (UPI) -- The head of the rebel Tamil Tigers remains in Sri Lanka and is leading attacks from his hideout, the country's army officials say.

It previously was thought Velupillai Prabhakaran had escaped the country and been replaced by other senior leaders, Colombopage reported Monday.

Prabhakaran, who heads the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, is believed to be in the last remaining Tamil-held area in the Puthukkudyiruppu area of the Mullaitivu District, said army spokesman Udaya Nanayakkara.

Prabhakaran may be using an underground bunker to direct his troops, Nanayakkara said.
