WASHINGTON, March 16 (UPI) -- Vice President Joe Biden's mother was in stable condition at the University of Pennsylvania hospital after undergoing hip surgery, Biden's office said.

Catherine Eugenia "Jean" Biden's surgery involved applying a plate and screw device to her hip, Biden spokeswoman Elizabeth Alexander said in a statement.

Biden's mother, 92, fell during the weekend at her residence in Delaware.

The vice president, during an address Monday at the International Association of Firefighters 2009 Legislative Conference in Washington, said his mother "came through."

"She broke her hip, and she came through the operation incredibly well," he said.
