MOSCOW, March 15 (UPI) -- President Hugo Chavez has offered Russia the use of an island off Venezuela as a temporary base for its strategic bombers, a Russian official said Saturday.

Maj. Gen. Anatoly Zhikharev said La Orchila Island could be used for long-range bombers with only minor alterations, CNN reported. The island, a Venezuelan naval base, has an airfield.

Zhikharev said there are four or five airfields in Cuba with runways that could be used by its bombers.
