"The Vice President's mother, Catherine Eugenia 'Jean' Biden, has been admitted to the University of Pennsylvania hospital today after a fall at her residence in Delaware," Alexander said. "She is currently receiving treatment and is in good spirits."

Biden devoted a section of his acceptance speech at the Democratic National Convention in Denver to his mother, who is 91. He said she taught her children "that you're defined by your sense of honor and you're redeemed by your loyalty."

"Failure -- failure at some point in your life is inevitable, but giving up is unforgivable," Biden said.

"My mother's creed is the American creed: No one is better than you. Everyone is your equal, and everyone is equal to you."

The vice president's father, Joseph Robinette Biden Sr., died in 2002.
