British cleric fundraises for militants

LONDON, March 15 (UPI) -- A radical Islamic cleric in England has urged his followers to give cash to front-line al-Qaida-linked militants in Iraq.

Anjem Choudary, the former head of the banned British group al-Muhajiroun, told his followers in a recording to stop spending their money on their families and instead sent it to Muslim soldiers waging holy war, The Times of London reported Sunday.

Choudary has previously called for British women to be forced to wear burqas and for adulterers to be killed, the newspaper noted.

The Times said a group of Choudary's followers yelled at soldiers from the Royal Anglian Regiment as they paraded through Luton last week, calling them "butchers and killers."

Choudary later called the troops "cowards who cannot fight," the newspaper reported.

"It is crucial that Choudary is investigated by the police and if the evidence stacks up he must be charged," said Patrick Mercer, chairman of the Commons Subcommittee on Counterterrorism.
