SANTA ANA, Calif., March 14 (UPI) -- Orange County in Southern California has dropped an education contract with Planned Parenthood and is considering funding a "pro-life ministry" instead.
County supervisors voted unanimously Tuesday to end the $291,788 contract with Planned Parenthood to provide health information for teenagers.
Supervisor Bill Campbell told the Los Angeles Times in a story published Saturday that Planned Parenthood, which provides abortions while other organizations try to explain "every option there is available." He said he has been in discussions with Birth Choice Health Clinics of Mission Viejo, Calif.
Birth Choice was founded by Kathleen Eaton, who said she provides an "abstinence-based" program that does provide information on birth control. She told the Times she has a meeting with Campbell scheduled for April 6.
On its Web site, Birth Choice describes its "Teen Integrity" program as educating teens on "the importance of building satisfying and mature relationships free from sexually transmitted diseases, unwanted pregnancy and heartache, by promoting abstinence until marriage."
The Birth Choice Web site includes Biblical quotations and refers to the organization's relationship to God, Jesus and Christianity.
"When you look at choice, one of those choices is having a baby, and I think we've lost that in this society," Eaton said. "They come (to Birth Choice) to find out ... is it a baby? If you go to Planned Parenthood, the answer to that is no, but we believe it is a baby."
