British soldier dies in Afghanistan

KABUL, Afghanistan, March 14 (UPI) -- A British soldier with the Royal Welsh Regiment died Saturday in an explosion in Afghanistan's Helmand province, military authorities said.

The soldier was the 150th British serviceman to die in Afghanistan since operations began in 2001, CNN reported, noting the United States has lost 575 troops and Canada 112 troops in Afghanistan.

The soldier was on foot patrol with the 2nd Battalion, Royal Welsh Regiment in Musa Qala when insurgents bombed the unit, The Times of London reported.

Elsewhere in Helmand province, military officials credited a British marine with foiling an attack near the British army base in Sangin.

The marine used a shoulder-launched missile to kill three suspected insurgents who were attaching a pressure-plate trigger to a device they were burying in the road in northern Helmand, the Times reported.
