Trib honcho targeted in pay-to-play scheme

CHICAGO, March 13 (UPI) -- The chairman of the Tribune Co. was targeted for a $25,000 donation last November by the campaign of impeached Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich, documents show.

The name of Sam Zell appeared on an internal campaign document titled "Focus List" at the same time the Tribune Company was working on a deal to sell Wrigley Field, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Friday.

The newspaper says that document and others it obtained are the first signs that Blagojevich wanted to target Zell for money while his company was seeking state help in selling the ballpark.

Alongside Zell's name on the Nov. 25, 2008, document is a $25,000 figure and a notation that "Rod follow up."

Another campaign document, this one dated Dec. 3, lists Tribune Co. sports consultant Mark Ganis among a group of potential donors.

Ganis was hired by the media company to help structure the sale of the Chicago Cubs' ballpark.
