SAN DIEGO, March 13 (UPI) -- An 81-year-old pedophile has been ordered back into a California state hospital for violating the terms of his release.
Officials said John David Norman passed a note to a 19-year-old bagger at a grocery store in El Centro with his name and phone number, The San Diego Union Tribune reported. Norman also allegedly tried to find a roommate by placing a newspaper ad.
Norman said he was lonely and wanted to be able to talk to someone who was not involved in treating him.
A public defender, Marian Gastan, said Norman had not committed any crimes.
Judge Bernard Revak, who said he did not believe Norman could safely be left at large, noted that he has spent most of his life in prisons and state hospitals.
"I thought to myself, 'What would your epitaph be when you finally meet your maker?' I don't know," Revak said. "Emptiness. Loneliness. Violations of the law. Violations of the norms of society.
"It's really tragic."
