SASKATOON, Saskatchewan, March 13 (UPI) -- A jury in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Friday sentenced a man who killed two Canadian Mounties and wounded a third to life in prison.

The officers were shot during a pursuit of Dagenais by the three RCMP officers in two vehicles responding to an assault charge filed by his sister.

More than 30 witnesses testified and jurors were shown 70 exhibits of evidence during the 16-day trial that concluded with a guilty verdict on all counts Thursday.

The sentence carries a provision he not be eligible for parole for 25 years, the newspaper said.

In his defense, Dagenais testified all three officers shot at him before he fired back. He fled the scene and was the subject of a national manhunt until he turned himself in 11 days later, the report said.
