U.S. fighter jet makes emergency landing

SAN DIEGO, March 11 (UPI) -- A U.S. Navy fighter that made an emergency landing at North Island Naval Air Station near San Diego was never in danger, officials said.

The F/A-18E Super Hornet, which had taken off from the aircraft carrier Nimitz, landed without incident Tuesday after the pilot noticed that instruments indicated a possible problem in one of the jet's two engines, Lt. Cmdr. Charlie Brown told the San Diego Union-Tribune.

"At no time was the aircraft in peril," Brown said.

The incident came three months after four civilians died when a Marine Corps F/A-18D crashed into a neighborhood just west of the Miramar, Calif., Marine Corps Air Station while making a single-engine emergency landing, the Union-Tribune reported.
