Lincoln photo found in family album

WASHINGTON, March 11 (UPI) -- One of the last photos taken of U.S. President Abraham Lincoln before he was assassinated has been found in an album, an expert on Lincoln photography says.

Keya Morgan, a renowned collector and scholar, has authenticated a photograph of the 16th president discovered in an album owned by the family of Civil War Gen. Ulysses S. Grant, CNN reported Wednesday.

Grant's great-great grandson, Ulysses S. Grant VI, suspected that the towering figure in a group photo in the album might be Lincoln and contacted Morgan to see whether his suspicion could be verified.

Morgan persuaded Grant to remove the small photo from the album so they could inspect the back and found an inscription reading: "Lincoln in front of the White House," the date 1865 and the name of the photographer, Henry F. Warren.

Will Stapp, a founding curator of the National Portrait Gallery, agrees with Morgan's assessment that the photograph reveals a long-lost image of Lincoln.
