N.Y. doctor guilty of killing husband

NEW YORK, March 10 (UPI) -- A New York doctor was convicted Tuesday of arranging to have a relative kill her husband during a nasty custody dispute.

A jury in the borough of Queens found Dr. Mazoltuv Borukhova and a cousin-in-law, Mikhail Mallayev, guilty of first-degree murder and conspiracy after six hours of deliberations, The New York Times reported. Dr. Daniel Malakov, an orthodontist, was gunned down in 2007 in front of the couple's young daughter.

After hearing the verdict, members of the Malakov family shouted "God bless America" as they stood on the courthouse steps.

"Seventeen years ago, I came to this country," said Ezra Malakov, Dr. Malakov's uncle. "They told us that money decided everything here. But it turns out that the court made the right decision."

Both Borukhova and Malakov were from families who emigrated from Uzbekistan in the 1990s, settling in Queens. A few days before Malakov was shot, he had won custody of their daughter and was taking her to the park to see her mother when he was killed.
