McDonald's warned to clean up drug dealing

PITTSBURGH, March 10 (UPI) -- Pennsylvania authorities say they have warned McDonald's restaurants to crack down on alleged drug activity conducted by employees in Pittsburgh.

The warning issued to McDonald's Illinois headquarters came from District Attorney Stephen Zappala after police arrested a downtown Pittsburgh McDonald's employee on charges of selling drugs to an undercover informant in the rest room, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported Tuesday.

"The continuing cooperative effort that has been under way to keep Downtown a destination for families depends in large part on there being confidence in public safety," Zappala said in a statement. "I and other officials will not tolerate any type of criminal behavior that erodes that confidence and interferes with the positive developments taking place Downtown on a daily basis."

Pennsylvania law allows a business to be shuttered if prosecutors can show that it qualifies as a nuisance, the newspaper said.

"We take these allegations seriously," McDonald's said in a statement. "McDonald's and our franchisees are fully cooperating with the district attorney's office and police department on this matter."
