Man, 2 dogs, killed when hit by train

TORONTO, March 9 (UPI) -- A man's attempt to save his two dogs from being hit by a freight train in Toronto Monday may have resulted in all three of them being killed, police said.

Toronto police Sgt. Tim Burrows told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. it was believed the dogs may have run into the CP train's path and the 58-year-old man, whose name was not released, tried to save them. The accident occurred about 8 a.m. in Toronto's Summerhill neighborhood, the CBC said.

Burrows noted people have been known to use the train tracks illegally for dog walking.

"It's illegal to be on these tracks and we don't want people using it for this purpose at all," he said. "I hope this serves as a warning to people that this is not the area to be doing these types of things in."
