HARARE, Zimbabwe, March 9 (UPI) -- More than 4,000 people have died in the cholera epidemic that has gripped Zimbabwe, the United Nations said Monday.
In addition to those who have died, nearly 90,000 people have contracted the deadly disease, the United Nations said in a report issued at its headquarters in New York.
The U.N. Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs noted, however, that the 2,151 new cases identified last week were down from 8,000 per week at the start of 2009.
The latest report calculated the total number of people who have gotten sick at 89,018 and put the death toll at 4,011.
The report said the fatality rate in treatment centers has fallen to 1.8 percent, down significantly from more than 4 percent earlier on in the outbreak.
