CANCUN, Mexico, March 7 (UPI) -- The U.S. government warns those planning to visit Mexico for spring break or other vacations should be aware of the country's spike in violent crime.
The Los Angeles Times reported Saturday that, according to a U.S. travel alert, Mexico is mired in a significant upsurge in crimes ranging from homicides to robberies.
"Robberies, homicides, petty thefts and carjackings have all increased over the last year across Mexico generally, with notable spikes in Tijuana and northern Baja California," a Feb. 10 U.S. alert warned.
The rise in violence in Mexico prompted University of Arizona officials to warn their students visiting the Latin American country during spring break.
The Times said the violence is primarily between the Mexican government and regional drug cartels. Tourists have not appeared to be targeted, the newspaper said.
