Colleagues: Man shot by police depressed

PHILADELPHIA, March 7 (UPI) -- A Philadelphia Gas Works employee died Friday evening in a police shooting that appears to have been a case of what is often called "suicide by cop."

Police said the man was on top of the PGW building in North Philadelphia waving a gun and threatening to shoot himself, CBS3 reported. When he refused to follow police orders to put his gun down, he was shot dead.

Co-workers identified the dead man as Juan Delgado, 42, a chief dispatcher for PGW, and said he had been told that day he had cancer. They said he was also going through a divorce.

Juan Flores, who also works for PGW, said he was on his way to the building after exchanging text messages with Delgado throughout the day.

"I got here too late," he said.
