2 ducks shot with arrows in So. Florida

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla., March 7 (UPI) -- Police in South Florida are investigating the shootings of two Muscovy ducks by someone armed with a bow and arrows.

Both shootings occurred in Miramar, the South Florida Sun-Sentinel reported.

The second duck was found Thursday evening with a 2 1/2-foot arrow through its chest. It was still alive when police discovered it but was euthanized at the Wildlife Care Center in Fort Lauderdale because its injuries were too extensive to be treated. The first mortally wounded duck was found Monday.

Ethel Lipoff, a spokeswoman for the care center, said the type of arrow found in the duck is normally used to hunt large game.

"We've seen ducks come in shot with pellet guns, but certainly not by an arrow," Lipoff said.

The Humane Society of the United States has offered a $2,500 reward for information leading to an arrest.

There were two incidents of cruelty to Muscovy ducks early last fall. In one, two boys were charged with setting their Shi Tzu dogs on a duck, which had to be euthanized. In the other, an 18-year-old was charged with attacking a duck with a knife.
