D.C. vote bill facing uncertain future

WASHINGTON, March 5 (UPI) -- An effort aimed at getting the District of Columbia its first full vote in the U.S. House of Representatives is struggling to get enough support, sources say.

An anonymous senior House aide said House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer has been unable to find enough support for the D.C. proposal to justify bringing it to the House floor for discussion and a vote, The Washington Post reported Thursday.

"We weren't confident the votes would be there," the aide said.

The apparent delay in a vote on the matter comes after the vote bill appeared to be poised to receive legislative approval, the Post said.

A spokeswoman for Hoyer said the House leader intends on seeking a vote on the bill when possible, with Hoyer claiming a delay was necessary to allow the House to discuss other issues.

"Discussions are under way about how to move forward," spokeswoman Stephanie Lundberg said. "Our hope is to do so in the near future."

The Post said the National Rifle Association likely helped bring about the delay as the gun group has begun actively seeking a repeal of current Washington gun laws.
