WINNIPEG, Manitoba, March 5 (UPI) -- A judge in Winnipeg, Manitoba, ruled Thursday Vincent Li was not criminally responsible for beheading a fellow Greyhound bus passenger last year.
Li, 40, pleaded innocent Tuesday to second degree murder in the machete stabbing, beheading and mutilation death of 22-year-old Timothy McLean on a Winnipeg-bound bus last July.
Wednesday, both defense and prosecution lawyers agreed on psychiatric testimony that Li was schizophrenic and delusional at the time of the attack.
Psychiatrists said Li believed he was acting on orders from God when he attacked McLean and not only mutilated his body but decapitated him and ate part of his body during a 5-hour standoff with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police, the Canadian Broadcasting Corp. said.
As a result of the ruling, Li will not have a criminal record, and will be sent to a secure psychiatric hospital, most likely in Selkirk, Manitoba, the CBC said.
Carol deDelley, the victim's mother, said she will do everything possible to see that Li never is set free, the Winnipeg Free Press reported.
"I am absolutely terrified of him and his capabilities. I think he'd do it again," deDelley said.
