Troubled plane makes safe belly landing

WINNIPEG, Manitoba, March 4 (UPI) -- Two young female pilots managed to safely belly-land a plane carrying 10 people in Winnipeg, Manitoba, a day after the craft had similar landing gear problems.

The flight was bound for the international airport from northern Manitoba around 11 a.m. Tuesday when Perimeter Aviation Capt. Kristen McCallum, 26, and first officer Marie-Eve Robichaud, 25, said their right landing gear wouldn't open and lock, the Winnipeg Free Press reported.

They circled for 45 minutes in the twin-engine Metro aircraft before touching down without wheels in a spark- and smoke-filled landing, the newspaper said.

No one was injured, officials said.

Meanwhile, Peter Hildebrand of the Transportation Safety Board of Canada said investigators were told the same aircraft had a similar landing gear problem a day earlier on approach to Winnipeg and both incidents were being examined.

Monday's flight landed safely after air traffic controllers visually confirmed the landing gear was down, the newspaper said.
