U.S. report: Thailand not drug source

WASHINGTON, March 1 (UPI) -- Thailand was not a major source country for illegal drugs in 2008, the annual U.S. report on trafficking said.

The International Narcotics Control Strategy Report, produced by the State Department, said Thailand continues to be a source for precursors, chemicals used in drug manufacture, and that drug money is laundered there, The Bangkok Post reported.

"There is no significant drug cultivation or production in Thailand," the report said.

Thailand was included with the United States on a list of 15 countries that serve as a source for precursors, and on a list of 60 countries in which traffickers dispose of cash.

The failure of Myanmar, the country formerly known as Burma, to crack down on its drug trafficking gangs is affecting its neighbors, including Thailand, the report said.

A recent U.N. report found that more land in northern Thailand was being used for opium poppies. But the U.S. report found that no opium or heroin was originating in Thailand, the newspaper said.
