MARQUETTE, Mich., Feb. 28 (UPI) -- A Michigan woman with two uteri became the mother of twins -- the third known instance of such a birth.
Valerie and Kaylin Reinfelder were seven weeks premature when they were delivered by Caesarean section Thursday at Marquette General Hospital, WLUC-TV in Marquette reported. The girls weighed in at 4 pounds each and will remain in the hospital while their lungs develop.
Sarah Reinfelder of Sault St. Marie and her husband, Shane, were able to hold the girls Friday.
The Reinfelders also have a 10-month-old son, William. Sarah Reinfelder learned a few years ago after a miscarriage that she had two uteri. She said her pregnancy with William was difficult.
Then, only a few months later, she discovered she was pregnant again.
"They told me your birth control isn't working, guess what, you're pregnant," she said. "I was like OK. And then they did the ultrasound and said guess what you're pregnant twice! And that's when I almost wet my pants."
