MOSCOW, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- The upcoming Russian-European Union summit is to be held in Khabarovsk in the Russian Far East, officials said Friday.

Sergei Prikhodko, an aide to Russian President Dimitry Medvedev said Khabarovsk was chosen over Kazan, capital of the Republic of Tatarstan, the Novosti news agency reported.

Miroslav Kostelka, the Czech ambassador to Moscow, said the summit has been scheduled for May 21 and May 22. The Czech Republic holds the rotating EU presidency.

Leaders from Russia and the EU meet every six months. Traditionally, the first meeting of the year is in Russia and the second in the country holding the EU presidency.
