Police find $5 million from bank robbery

DUBLIN, Ireland, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- Police say they have recovered $5 million of the nearly $8.9 million in cash stolen from a bank in Dublin, Ireland.

Police said the money was taken from a Bank of Ireland branch in Dublin this week by an employee whose family was being threatened by an armed gang, the BBC reported Saturday. Members of the gang broke into the home of the 24-year-old bank employee Thursday night and took his partner, her mother and a 5-year-old boy hostage.

The employee was then forced to go to the bank early Friday and take nearly $8.9 million packed into laundry bags, the British network said. Shortly after handing over the stolen funds, the man's family was freed.

The Irish Times said police had seven people in custody suspected of taking part in the kidnapping and robbery scheme.

In addition to finding a portion of the cash in the Dublin suburbs of Phibsboro and Blanchardstown, police had arrested a woman and six men.
