Ill. to keep Blago's free transit rides

CHICAGO, Feb. 28 (UPI) -- Illinois Gov. Pat Quinn says he won't eliminate his impeached predecessor's program that provides free bus and train rides to senior citizens.

Quinn, a Democrat, said Friday he would not support a bill introduced by Republican State Rep. Suzanne Bassi of Palatine, Ill., to limit former Gov. Rod Blagojevich's free transit ride program to low-income seniors, The Chicago Tribune reported Saturday.

"I don't think I would sign such a bill that would limit it so drastically," Quinn told reporters. "I think free rides for seniors is a basic public policy that we can support and maintain even in tough economic times."

Blagojevich last year demanded free rides on the Chicago Transit Authority, Metra commuter trains and suburban Pace buses for seniors when he agreed to a sales tax increase to bail out the transit agencies, the newspaper said.
