Poll finds support for Gustav abdication

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- One-third of respondents in a recent poll say Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf should abdicate his throne to his daughter, Victoria, results indicate.

The results of the poll conducted by the Sifo polling firm showed that one-third of the poll's 1,000 respondents said Crown Princess Victoria should take Gustaf's place on the throne once he reaches retirement age, the Swedish news agency Tidningarnas Telegrambyra/The Local said Friday.

The call for abdication on the part of Gustaf was particularly high among women as 44 percent of all female respondents, aged 30-49, called for Victoria to take the throne.

Despite such respondents' opinions, the 62-year-old king has retained the support of a good portion of his constituents, poll results indicate.

The poll found that a total of 45 percent of all respondents want Gustaf to remain the head of state in Sweden, TT/The Local reported.

All poll respondents were at least 15 years old. No margin of error for the survey results was provided.
