Obama makes two Pentagon nominations

WASHINGTON, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- U.S. President Barack Obama nominated two people to fill key posts in the Defense Department, the White House said.

Obama nominated Jim Miller as principle deputy under secretary for policy and retired Marine Lt. Gen. Wallace "Chip" Gregson as assistant secretary for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs, the White House said in a release.

The White House also announced several individuals would remain in their current posts at the Defense Department, including Mike Donley, secretary of the Air Force; Retired Air Force Lt. Gen. James R. Clapper, under secretary of defense for intelligence; and Michael G. Vickers, assistant secretary of defense for special operations, low intensity conflict and interdependent capabilities.

"I am confident that these distinguished individuals have the commitment and expertise to help guide the Department of Defense at this critical time for our nation," Obama said. "Under the leadership of Secretary Gates, this group will help us maintain a strong and effective military to accomplish the fundamental goals of keeping America safe, advancing our interests abroad, and restoring American leadership in the world."
