Dobson quits as head of Focus on Family

COLORADO SPRINGS, Feb. 27 (UPI) -- James Dobson told employees Friday that he is resigning as chairman of the conservative Colorado-based Christian group Focus on the Family.

Dobson, 72, said that he is not leaving Focus on the Family, which he founded, The Denver Post reported. He will still have an office on the campus in Colorado Springs and host the radio show "Focus on the Family."

"I'm not limping away. I'm not going anywhere. My voice will still be strong," Dobson said at the monthly chapel service for employees.

Dobson's wife, Shirley, is also resigning from the board of directors, a spokesman, Gary Schneeberger, said. He said that the couple want to spend more time with their grandchildren.

In addition to hosting the radio show, Dobson will continue to write a newsletter and Focus on the Family's monthly appeal for contributions.

Focus on the Family has been controversial for advocating spanking young children and for its opposition to homosexuality, which Dobson argues is learned behavior not an innate tendency.
