WASHINGTON, Feb. 26 (UPI) -- The 2010 budget initiative proposes a $2 billion increase for the U.S. Transportation Department from $70.5 billion to $72.5 billion.
President Barack Obama presented his fiscal year 2010 budget outline to Congress Thursday.
The Transportation Department also received $48.1 billion in the American Reinvestment and Recovery Act for shovel-ready infrastructure construction projects.
The proposed 2010 budget includes a five-year, $5 billion state grant program for high-speed rail projects, which is above $8 billion set aside for high-speed rail projects in the stimulus package.
The budget proposal also commits to better target surface transportation spending and explore options to make U.S. communities more livable and less congested, with options such as road pricing, the document said.
The outline also includes $800 million to upgrade the air traffic control system.
