FAA sued over safety recommendations

WASHINGTON, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- The U.S. government is being sued by an airline safety watchdog for allegedly failing to act on suggested runway improvements and plane icing issues.

The Buffalo (N.Y.) News reported Wednesday that an airline safety group says the Federal Aviation Administration is too cozy with the airline industry and airplane manufacturers. They also said the FAA has ignored a bevy of recommendations by the National Transportation Safety Board.

The National Air Disaster Alliance Foundation filed its lawsuit to force the FAA to adopt testing requirements for flight certification of turboprop planes.

Mary Schiavo, a former inspector general of the U. S. Department of Transportation and aviation expert, said the FAA is obligated to act on recommendations.

"Look, 10 years in some cases is too long," Schiavo said, after she filed the lawsuit in federal court in Washington.

For its part, the U.S. Department of Transportation says the FAA has issued more than 100 safety directives.
