Arms dealer gets 30-year prison sentence

NEW YORK, Feb. 25 (UPI) -- A Syrian arms dealer will spend the next 30 years in prison after being convicted in New York of conspiring to kill U.S. nationals, prosecutors say.

Prosecutors said in addition to the conspiracy charge, Monzer al-Kassar and co-defendant Luis Felipe Moreno Godoy were both convicted of money laundering, conspiracy to acquire and export anti-aircraft missiles and conspiracy to provide support for guerrillas in Colombia, CNN reported Wednesday.

Godoy received a 25-year prison sentence as a result of the November convictions.

The U.S. attorney's office in New York said in a news release in addition to the prison sentence, al-Kassar will forfeit all of his personal assets.

Godoy and al-Kassar had been selling weaponry to Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia rebels as part of a plot to kill U.S. nationals, CNN said. Both men were arrested in 2007.
