Memorial to Queen Mum unveiled in London

LONDON, Feb. 24 (UPI) -- The late Queen Mother, who outlived her husband, King George VI, by 50 years, was back with him Tuesday on the Mall in London in a newly unveiled memorial.

Queen Elizabeth II presided at the unveiling ceremony honoring her mother, The Guardian reported. She was joined by other members of the royal family and by Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

The memorial includes a larger-than-life bronze statue of a middle-age queen wearing the robes and plumed hat of the Order of the Garter. On either side are bronze relief panels, one showing the queen and her husband talking to Londoners during the Blitz of World War II and the other an older queen indulging in her passion for horse-racing, talking to veterans and relaxing with her corgis.

The Queen Mum, as she was sometimes known, died in 2002 at the age of 101. She outlived her husband, who died of coronary thrombosis at the age of 56, and her younger daughter, Princess Margaret, who died two months before her mother.
