More women selling hair as economy tanks

CHICAGO, Feb. 23 (UPI) -- A Web site that sells hair says the number of people trying to sell their tresses has quadrupled during the last year as the economy declined.

Thehairtrader.com reports a booming business from sellers who create their own classified ads with photos and written descriptions, the Chicago Sun-Times reported Monday.

"I'm currently unemployed and I thought if I could get a little bit of money, I would try," said Janet Mcie of Oak Lawn, Ill., who is offering her 24-inch ponytail.

Another seller from the Chicago area said she hoped her foot of blonde hair would bring $800 to help her during difficult financial times.

Most of the sellers are from the United States but the buyers come from around the world, paying more than $2,000 for the most luxurious hair, Melinda Mullin, the site's spokeswoman, told the newspaper.

The number of sellers have quadrupled and sales are up 50 percent over this time last year, Mullin said to the Sun-Times, noting the hair is used for wigs, extensions and doll manes.
