Swedish police recruit says academy racist

STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Feb. 21 (UPI) -- The heads of the Swedish National Police and the National Police Academy have promised to investigate claims of racism by an immigrant police recruit.

The recruit, who was identified only as Ahmed, told the newspaper Dagens Nyheter that the racism at the academy is the worst he has endured. Ahmed has lived in Sweden since he was a baby.

He said in an interview published Friday that some instructors at the academy try to keep immigrants from succeeding.

"Can it really be like this? If it is, it is good for us to know," said Ingmar Bergman, the rector of the academy.

Police Commissioner Bengt Svensson had already arranged for an investigation into racism in the police. That was in response to an incident in December in a Malmo suburb in which several police officers were videotaped using racist slurs and abusive language.

"All colleagues and chiefs are responsible for their own behavior and to act against the use of inappropriate language and an unhealthy working environment," Svensson said.
