Ex-D.C. mayor prepares for transplant

WASHINGTON, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- Former Washington Mayor Marion Barry is scheduled to undergo a kidney transplant at Howard University Hospital, a hospital official said.

The organ donor for Friday's scheduled surgery is a longtime female friend of the former mayor, WRC-TV, Washington, reported Thursday.

Barry, now a member of the District of Columbia City Council, has reportedly been undergoing four-hour dialysis sessions three times a week.

Federal prosecutors last week asked a judge to send Barry, 72, to jail for not filing his 2007 tax return on time. He was on probation for failing to file on time in the past and had failed to file on time in eight of the past nine years.

Barry has said his medical problems have distracted him from filing his taxes on time.
