Yemen extradites al-Qaida suspect

SANA, Yemen, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- Authorities in Yemen said Wednesday they have extradited a Saudi man who rejoined al-Qaida after being released from detention at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

Saudi Arabia recently asked for help in apprehending Mohammed al-Awfi along with 84 other al-Qaida suspects, CNN reports.

Awfi, who goes by several names, appeared in a video last month along with another Guantanamo detainee believed to have been responsible for an attack on the U.S. Embassy in Yemen last September that killed nearly a dozen people.

The attack came barely a year after Awfi and Saeed Shihri were released to the custody of Saudi Arabia.

CNN says it is rare for the kingdom to admit that some of its most wanted terrorists are on the loose and it needs help in finding them.

Interpol issued a rare global alert for Awfi and Saeed Shihri last week.
