BAGHDAD, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- Gunmen shot and killed a Sunni Arab politician Wednesday in a southeastern area of Baghdad, the Interior Ministry said.

A ministry official said Samir Hamed, a member of the Iraqi Islamic Party, was killed as he traveled in the Zafaraniya neighborhood, CNN reported. The Iraqi Islamic Party is headed by the country's vice president, Tariq al-Hashimi, a Sunni.

Also killed Wednesday was an Iraqi police officer, who died when a roadside bomb exploded by a police convoy in Mosul, officials said.
