SEATTLE, Feb. 17 (UPI) -- Military police say they are investigating a weekend incident in which a 16-year-old girl died on the Fort Lewis U.S. Army base in the state of Washington.
Another 16-year-old girl was found unconscious at the Fort Lewis barracks, about 50 miles south of Seattle, and was listed in stable condition at Madigan Army Medical Center, the Seattle Post-Intelligencer reported Tuesday.
Army spokesman John Norgren told the newspaper there were no signs of trauma and no immediately apparent reason for the girl's death. He said an Army-led autopsy was scheduled for the victim, the results of which would be released in one or two weeks.
The girls were discovered in the barracks early Sunday. Norgren said military criminal investigators were probing the incident and a review of base policies and procedures, including those governing civilian access to barracks, was under way.
"One soldier has been questioned in regards to what happened because allegedly he knew the girls," Norgren told the Post-Intelligencer. "He was part of the incident."
