Car, bus crash kills Mountie, his 2 kids

ST. JOHN, New Brunswick, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- The Royal Canadian Mounted Police were reconstructing a New Brunswick accident Monday in which a Mountie and two of his children died after hitting a bus.

RCMP spokesman Sgt. Claude Tremblay said the accident happened about 7 p.m. Sunday as the southbound car hit the northbound Acadian Lines bus near St. John, Canwest News Service reported Monday.

"The car slid sideways in front of the bus. It was very slippery conditions, icy roads," Tremblay told the Canadian Broadcasting Corp.

No one on the bus was injured.

The driver was identified as RCMP Constable Jason Porter, 31, his 5-year-old daughter Hannah and 3-year-old son Jack, the report said.

There was no one else in the car at the time of the crash, although Porter has a wife and two other children, Canwest said.

Tremblay said funeral plans had not been finalized, and the family had a choice of a private ceremony or an RCMP honors funeral.
