The Colombia Institute for Geology and Mines ordered an evacuation for about 7,000 people living near the volcano, which is in a sparsely populated area, the U.S. broadcaster said.

Historians said Galeras has erupted several times since becoming active in 1989, with nine people dying in a 1993 incident.
