U.N. to investigate bombings in Gaza

UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- The United Nations is sending a team to the Middle East to investigate the bombing of its buildings and convoys, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says.

In a statement released Thursday night, Ban said he expects all parties to cooperate, The Jerusalem Post reported. The team will be headed by Ian Martin, a British national who formerly headed Amnesty International.

Ban said this week the United Nations would have its own investigation. Earlier, he had said he would wait for Israel to complete its probe, but he said he changed his mind because residents of Gaza called for an independent investigation.

One reported incident has already proved to be unfounded. The United Nations charged that Israel targeted a school that had been converted into a refugee shelter but later acknowledged that the shell fell just outside the school compound, not inside.
