BAGHDAD, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- More than 30 people died and 84 were injured Friday when a female suicide bomber detonated a device on a major Shiite pilgrimage route in Iraq, officials said.

The attack occurred in Iskandariya, south of Baghdad, along a route pilgrims travel to the Shiite holy city of Kerbala to mark Arbain, an important day in the Shiite religious calendar, The Daily Telegraph said. It occurred one day after a bomb killed eight people near a shrine in Kerbala.

Arbain marks the end of a 40-day mourning period following the anniversary of the death of the Prophet Mohammad's grandson Imam Hussein in the seventh century.
