China, Cuba deny human rights violations

GENEVA, Switzerland, Feb. 13 (UPI) -- China and Cuba both denied they have violated the basic human rights of their residents in the past, the U.N. Human Rights Council said Friday.

The council said in a Human Rights Watch release that was based on the results of a human rights review of 16 countries, both China and Cuba steadfastly refused to acknowledge alleged violations taking place inside their borders.

"The Human Rights Council's review is a good litmus test of a government's real commitment to human rights," said Juliette de Rivero, Human Rights Watch's Geneva advocacy director. "For example, China and Cuba went out of their way to deny that they ever violate rights, while Mexico and Germany agreed to discuss difficult aspects of their records."

China not only refused to discuss of its past human right difficulties but also downplayed all human rights allegations against it as politicized attacks, Human Rights Watch said.

Cuba rejected claims it is holding political prisoners, claiming all of its current prisoners were convicted through due process.
