The cause of the deadly explosion in the holy Shiite city has yet to be determined. The blast occurred in the wake of a series of bombings that apparently targeted Shiite pilgrims traveling to Karbala to take part in the Shiite holy day of Arbaeen.

CNN said 16 people were killed Wednesday in a double car bombing at a Baghdad bus station. The bombing, which left 43 people wounded, took place as Shiite pilgrims were gathering in the area.

Roadside bombings in Baghdad claimed the lives of two pilgrims and left 16 others wounded Wednesday, CNN reported.
