Red Cross worker abducted in Pakistan

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- Pakistani militants have kidnapped a Red Cross worker, apparently an American, in the country's restive Swat Valley region, local media reports said Wednesday.

Pakistani television says the worker for the International Committee of Red Cross was abducted two days after Taliban militants beheaded a kidnapped Polish engineer when the government failed to meet its ransom demands, KUNA, the Kuwait news agency, reported.

Unnamed security sources told the news agency the Red Cross worker was believed to be an American. He was kidnapped by the same group that abducted the Polish engineer in northwestern Pakistan last September.

Local reports said the Red Cross worker was on a routine visit to the areas affected by Islamabad's military offensive against Taliban militants when unknown gunmen intercepted his car and kidnapped him at gunpoint in an area where security forces have been conducting operations since November 2007, KUNA said.
