STOCKHOLM, Sweden, Feb. 11 (UPI) -- Thirteen people were sent to a hospital after someone threw a container filled with acid into an apartment near Jonkoping in central Sweden, police said.

Police and emergency crews arriving at the scene said a brown liquid in the container caused severe throat irritation, the Swedish news agency tt reported Wednesday.

The liquid was believed to be hydrofluoric acid, a highly corrosive substance that can quickly penetrate skin and also interfere with nerve functioning. If it gets into the blood stream, hydrofluoric acid can cause cardiac arrest.

Two people in the apartment at the time of the attack said they were awakened by the sound of breaking glass when the container came crashing through a window.
